Creating a Chalkboard or Writeable Wall Without Making the Room Look Dark

Chalkboard walls look fun and creative, but the classic black version can make smaller rooms feel heavy. There are ways to enjoy writeable surfaces without turning your home into a dark café.

One option is to choose coloured chalkboard paint. Many brands offer green, blue or grey alternatives that still accept chalk but feel softer visually.

Instead of painting an entire wall, use a panel approach—a framed rectangle, the lower half of a wall, the side of a cupboard, or a section near the kitchen or study. The rest of the wall can stay light.

Whiteboard paints are another solution. They let you write with markers on a plain white or lightly tinted wall. Great for study rooms, home offices or kids’ rooms where you want notes but not a dark surface.

You can also mount a large chalkboard or whiteboard as if it were artwork, rather than painting directly onto the wall.

The idea is to bring in the playful, practical element of writing surfaces while keeping your room bright and airy.
