Creating a Simple “Sensory Corner” With Plants for Smell, Touch and Colour

A sensory corner doesn’t have to be big. It’s just a small spot—on a balcony, near a window, even by the entrance—where your senses get a gentle treat.

For smell, include fragrant plants: basil, mint, lemongrass, jasmine, or local scented varieties. Brushing your hand over them releases a fresh scent that instantly lifts the mood.

For touch, choose plants with interesting textures—soft leaves, slightly fuzzy surfaces, or even smooth, thick succulents. Kids especially love touching and learning “this one feels like this, that one like that.”

For colour, a mix of greens with a few flowering plants or variegated leaves (those with stripes or patterns) makes the corner visually engaging. You can use colourful pots if you prefer simple green plants.

Add one comfortable element for yourself—a small stool, a chair, or just a standing spot where you naturally pause. Maybe a tiny wind chime or water bowl for birds.

This small sensory corner becomes your mini pause button during the day: water the plants, touch a leaf, breathe in the scent, and then go back to your schedule feeling slightly more human.
