How Often Different Rooms Actually Need Repainting in a Normal Home

Paint doesn’t come with an expiry date, but some spaces do age faster than others. Repainting at the right interval keeps your home feeling fresh without wasting money.

Living rooms and dining areas typically see a lot of activity and occasional scuffs. Depending on use and colour, they usually need repainting or at least a good touch-up every 4–6 years.

Bedrooms can often stretch a bit longer, especially adult bedrooms that don’t see rough play. Light neutrals in these spaces may look fine for 5–7 years if there’s no dampness or smoking indoors.

Kids’ rooms, hallways and areas around switches wear out faster. Fingerprints, crayons, and knocks add up. These may need attention every 3–4 years, or partial repainting in between.

Kitchens and bathrooms deal with moisture, heat and grease. Walls near the stove, sink and exhaust can start looking tired in 3–5 years, even with washable paints.

Instead of waiting for everything to look bad at once, you can plan small paint projects room by room over time. That way, the house never hits a “completely worn out” stage.
