One-Hour Micro-Makeover Ideas for Guests Coming Over on Short Notice

Guests coming and the house looks “okay” but not great? You don’t need a full cleaning marathon. A one-hour micro-makeover focuses on what people actually notice.

First 15 minutes: clear clutter from visible surfaces—dining table, coffee table, sofa, entry console, kitchen counter. Don’t start sorting deeply; just collect extras into one or two baskets and tuck them in a room you can close for now.

Next 15 minutes: speed clean the bathroom guests will use. Wipe the sink, clean the mirror, change the towel, empty the bin, and make sure there’s soap and toilet paper.

Then 15 minutes on living and dining area: straighten cushions, lay a fresh runner or mat on the table, fix curtains, and add a simple centrepiece—a plant, a bowl, or a candle.

Last 15 minutes: focus on smell and light. Open windows for a bit if possible, then adjust lighting—use warm lamps instead of only harsh overhead lights. Light an incense stick or mild candle if you like.

You’re not aiming for perfection. You’re aiming for “pleasant and welcoming,” which is more about surfaces, light and freshness than about every corner being spotless.
